Anal Condoms: Safely Explore the Backdoor
Don’t even think about taking a stroll through the backdoor without using a condom. Anal sex might not result in pregnancy, but it comes with a higher risk of STI transmission than vaginal and oral sex.
Using a condom during anal sex can keep you safe from the kinds of diseases you really don’t want to get—such as HIV and syphilis.
And, if you choose the right rubber, having sex with an anal condom feels great too.
Condomania is home to one of the best selections of condoms approved by the FDA for anal sex. Only one brand has got the FDA’s seal of approval for anal—ONE Condoms.
This is only because other brands never tested their condoms specifically for their anal effectiveness.
Nevertheless, standard condoms have long been recommended for use during anal sex by the bigwigs at the FDA, CDC, and organizations like Planned Parenthood.
Condomania’s list of anal condoms above includes official FDA-approved anal condoms by ONE Condoms as well as a range of additional condoms we’ve found to be anal-worthy.
Are you ready to explore the backdoor in style? Start by clicking one of the anal condoms above!
What is an Anal Condom?
An anal condom is a condom that you wear on your penis while having anal sex. Anal condoms are critical to preventing STI transmission during anal sex.
Anal condoms are the same as vaginal condoms. So, in nearly every case, if you can use a condom for vaginal sex, you can also use it for anal. The exception to this rule is spermicidal condoms (never use spermicidal condoms for anal sex). Also, avoid any warming/tingling condoms during anal sex.
We’ve found that some condoms are better suited for anal. For example, some have a firmer grip, and others help you feel more sensation. Some condoms, such as ribbed condoms, may be more pleasurable for the bottom (the receiving partner). We’ve put our favorite condoms for anal on the list above.
Recently, ONE Condoms became the first brand of condoms approved by the FDA for anal sex. This means that all ONE Condoms (except for their flavored condoms) are officially anal sex condoms.

How are Anal Condoms Different from Standard Condoms?
In terms of function, there’s no difference between anal condoms and standard condoms. They are the same condoms. You wear them in the same way, and they protect you in the same way as if you were having vaginal sex.
However, there are differences between anal condoms and regular condoms when it comes to preference and regulatory approval.
- Regarding preference: This is based on our expert opinion and the opinions of others around the web. These condoms are standard condoms that we believe to be well-suited for anal sex. We prefer them over other condoms when having anal sex because they make us feel great when giving or receiving anal.
- Regarding regulatory approval: We’re talking about the FDA—the government body that approves condoms for safe sex. The FDA has approved every condom on the list above for safe vaginal sex (98% effective against STI transmission and pregnancy). Only one brand of condoms has been approved by the FDA for anal sex: ONE Condoms.
ONE Condoms did tests to demonstrate that their condoms were over 99% effective for anal sex (no breaks, tears, or slips). They submitted those tests to the FDA, and now they have a fancy new certification.
It’s important to keep in mind that ONE Condoms does not make a condom specifically for anal sex. Their testing demonstrated that all of their condoms could hold up to the pressures of anal.
Other condom brands have not done these tests, but it’s safe to assume that their condoms are also safe for anal sex. These other brands are FDA approved for vaginal sex, and they’ve met the same safety and strength standards as One Condoms.
How Do You Wear an Anal Condom?
You wear an anal condom in the exact same way that you wear a condom for vaginal sex. Follow the same steps to put on the condom, and when you’re finished, dispose of the condom in the same way.
If you need a refresher on how to put on a condom, find the steps to wear an anal condom safely and confidently here.
Over 50% of guys put on condoms the wrong way, and this leads to a huge drop in condom effectiveness. So, it’s worth taking a minute to review the steps!
Do You Really Need to Use a Condom for Anal Sex?
You can’t get a butt pregnant, so why wear a condom?
Pregnancy isn’t a big risk during anal sex (though it is possible for your man juice to leak from one hole to the other, resulting in a baby). However, it doesn’t mean that condoms are any less important.
In fact, condoms are extremely important when having anal sex because the risk of passing or contracting an STI is much, MUCH greater.
For example, the risk of getting HIV is 18 times higher when having anal sex compared to vaginal sex. That’s a big deal.
If you’re having sex with a casual partner, you should always wear a condom—no matter what type of sex you’re having. That includes vaginal, anal, and even oral sex.
Can You Use Anal Condoms for Vaginal Sex Too?
Yes! Any anal condom on this list can also be used for vaginal sex.
There’s just one rule you MUST follow: Always put on a new condom when switching from the vagina to the butt and vice versa. One condom is meant for just one hole.
The butt and vagina are both very sensitive environments that have a delicate pH and bacterial balance. If bacteria or other fluids from one enter the other, it can cause discomfort or an infection.
So, if you find a condom you love to use for anal sex, dedicate it solely to anal. If you want to switch to vaginal sex, take off your anal condom and put on a condom you prefer for vaginal sex.
What Kinds of Anal Condoms Are There?
Anal condoms are the same as vaginal condoms, so you can find them in just as many sizes, shapes, and styles. We particularly recommend the following condom styles for anal sex:
- Textured condoms: These condoms have upraised ribs, studs, or designs on their exterior. This can boost the pleasure for your partner, as the textures rub against their back door with each thrust. Try ONE Super Studs or Trojan Ultra Ribbed Ecstasy.
- Ultra-thin condoms: With an ultra-thin condom, you can feel more of your partner thanks to a thinner barrier. We love ultra-thin condoms for anal—they make everything feel warmer and cozier. Try Kimono MicroThin Plus and Unique Pull for the thinnest encounters.
- Climax control condoms: Butts can be destructively tight, turning even the most experienced Don Juan into a 2-pump chump. There’s no shame in it, but if you want to go longer, try an extra-strength condom (it has a thicker barrier) or a desensitizing condom to help control your O. Find some climax-control condoms here.
There are also a few styles of condoms you should NEVER use when having anal sex. The following condoms contain ingredients that could irritate the sensitive inner butt.
- Flavored condoms: Flavored condoms contain flavoring agents that don’t belong in the butt. These condoms should not be used for vagina sex, either. Oral only!
- Spermicidal condoms: Spermicide can damage the delicate rectal lining, making it easier to catch an STI.
- Condoms with Added Sensations: Some condoms contain special lube that creates a tingling, warming, or intensifying sensation. While these might feel good during vaginal sex, they will feel much more intense during anal. They’ll probably make your butthole feel like it’s been set on fire.
Are Anal Condoms Safe?
Yes, anal condoms are completely safe as long as you wear them correctly. To wear one correctly, you must:
- Put the condom on the right way
- Wear the right size condom
- Use lube (you need lots of lube during anal!)
- Dispose of the condom correctly
You can learn how to do all of that in this article.
It’s also important to put the condom on before starting your tush sesh. Many people start having anal sex without a condom before eventually putting one on. This is basically useless, as it leaves you totally vulnerable to STIs.
If you want some extra peace of mind when having anal sex, use a condom made by ONE Condoms. ONE Condoms are the only condoms that are approved by the FDA for anal sex.
