Can You Use a Vibrator if You’re Pregnant?

12 minute read

Your body undergoes many changes during pregnancy, but does your sex life have to change, too? Luckily, you can continue to have sex and masturbate during pregnancy.

And yes, you can use your vibrator as your baby bump grows.

Believe me, you’re going to need it.

It’s normal to experience swings of arousal while pregnant, and you may not always have a partner around to “take care” of your needs.

Keeping a vibrator handy is a great way to relieve stress and enjoy your changing body.

Using a vibrator during low-risk pregnancies can be safe, but your body may react differently as you become turned on and reach orgasm.

Sometimes, this is a good thing—you can experience heightened sensitivity and intense climaxes. And at other times, it can be a bit of a shock.

I’m talking about cramps and even contractions. And, there are a few safety concerns to be aware of too.

I’ve been through it all before, and I’ll give you the full, OBGYN-backed rundown below.

Can You Use a Vibrator While Pregnant?

Yes, if your pregnancy is low-risk, it’s safe to use a vibrator both internally and externally during your pregnancy.

Your baby lives far up in your uterus, which is protected by your uterine muscles, the amniotic sac, and the cervix.

There’s practically zero risk of disturbing your baby or complicating your pregnancy by using a vibrator or having sex.

Of course, you need to use common sense and use your vibrator as intended. Here are a few tips.

Keep it Clean

Most importantly, you need to ensure that your vibrator and your hands are sparkling clean when engaging in any sexy business. A sex toy won’t complicate your pregnancy, but an infection could.

To keep your vibrator clean, gently wash it with warm water and antibacterial soap (hand soap is fine). Just make sure to do this right before and after using your toy.

You can take extra cleanliness precautions by trimming your nails and scrubbing your hands before playing with your toy.

Remember NEVER to switch holes without cleaning your vibrator first. For example, never use the toy on your butt and then touch your vulva.

This will put you on the fast track to an infection. If you are interested in anal and vaginal play, put a condom on your toy and change it when switching from one area to another.

Use Lube

You may need to use more lube than you normally do when pregnant, especially if you experience any dryness down there.

Using a vibrator without lube can lead to microtears in the vagina, which could put you at higher risk of infection.

If you experience any irritation, you might need to change your brand of lube.

Pregnancy alters your hormones and changes the chemical balance of your vagina. So, your go-to lube before pregnancy may not be ideal during pregnancy.

I recommend a clean, additive-free water-based lube like Sliquid H2O. If you’re feeling extra sensitive, go with a medical-grade lube like Pjur Med Sensitive.

Do not use silicone lube with silicone sex toys (which includes most vibrators).

Listen to Your Body

Every pregnancy is unique, and every pregnant body is different. If something doesn’t feel right when using your vibrator (such as pain or discomfort), stop what you’re doing.

Don’t worry too much if you feel some changes during masturbation or after orgasm. Some discomfort and light bleeding are nothing to worry about.

You may just need to change positions or be a bit gentler. (I’ll talk about some of the other harmless changes that might occur a bit later.)

However, if you experience any sharp pain or heavier bleeding, talk to your OB-GYN before engaging in sexual activity again.

Talk to Your Doctor

If you’re feeling a bit apprehensive about using sex toys while pregnant, just ask your OB-GYN. You don’t have to feel weird about it—sex and masturbation during pregnancy are normal.

I guarantee that your OB has discussed vibrators, butt plugs, BDSM, and much more in the context of pregnancy. It’s their job!

If you’ve had an atypical or high-risk pregnancy in the past, you should definitely talk to your doctor before having sex or masturbating.

Try These Vibrators for Pregnant Women

What are the best vibrators for pregnant women? Most vibrators work just as well when you’re pregnant as they do when you’re not.

But I have a few favorites that I’ll recommend below. I used a few of these during my pregnancy, and others were recommended by colleagues.

We all work extensively with sex toys, and we’ve tried every kind of vibrator on the market.

If some of the vibrators below look a little strange to you, check out our Vibrators 101 Guide.

It’ll give you a quick look at the range of different vibrators available and explain the type of stimulation they bring to the bedroom.

Satisfyer Pro 2 Air Pulse Clitoral Stimulator

Satisfyer Pro 2 Air Pulse Clitoral Stimulator

$49.99 $59.95

Satisfyer Pro 2 Air Pulse Stimulator You know you want it. The Satisfyer Pro 2 is a new style of clitoral stimulator. We call it "air suction" because it doesn't actually touch the clitoris!  Stimulates the clitoris using intense pressure… Read More

The Satisfyer Pro 2 is an air-suction vibrator for clitoral stimulation.

What is an air-suction vibrator? It uses rapid air pulses instead of a vibrating motor to create a suction sensation on your clit. If you haven’t used one of these, they are magical.

However, they can also be intense. So, if you’ve got a sensitive bean, you may want to consider a more traditional bullet like the Femme Fun vibrator found later on this list.

Even though the stimulation is intense, the Satisfyer Pro 2 is super gentle on your vulva—it’s just air!

The toy barely even touches you while delivering major orgasms, which is why I recommend it as a pregnancy vibrator.

The Magic Wand is universally recommended as a pregnancy must-have. This clit stimulator is a long baton-like wand with a bulbous head.

You rest the vibrating head on your clit and let the rumbly sensations carry you away to pleasuretown.

The original Magic Wand is a long, clunky beast of a toy. But that’s what makes it so great for pregnant women.

Thanks to its length and large vibrating surface, it’s really easy to maneuver the toy around a baby bump, especially in times of low flexibility.

You can also use the wand in multiple positions comfortably. As your belly grows, it might become uncomfortable to masturbate on your back.

With the wand, you can rub your rosebud in lots of positions. Sit on it, grind it, use it on your side, or even in the doggy position.

Bullet vibrators are fantastic clit stimulators for pregnant women, but they can get tricky to use once your bump starts to look more like a blimp. They’re just too small!

That’s why I love the Femme Fun FIXX XL. This is a bullet vibrator with an XL length, helping you deliver targeted vibes to your clit without having to strain your joints.

The length makes it more versatile than your average bullet, too. You can also use this toy for internal stimulation.

Another perk of this bullet is the price. At under $30, you can buy this toy for use during pregnancy and then go back to your favorite non-pregnancy toys later.

Remote-controlled toys are among the most popular pregnancy vibrators today.

Just set them in place, lay back, and enjoy the ride! You don’t have to worry about straining your back or reaching into any hard-to-explore places.

The VeDO Kiwi is a simple but effective egg-style vibrator. You insert it into the vagina and control it via a wireless remote.

It’s affordable yet well-made from high-quality silicone, and it has an impressive battery life of about 75 minutes.

If you want to try a remote-controlled vibrator without spending too much cash, the VeDO Kiwi is a good gateway toy.

It has 10 vibration modes and 6 speeds, so you won’t get bored. And it’s attached to a long loop that makes it easy to pull out. The Kiwi is fully submersible, too—perfect for the bath!

For a high-end remote-controlled vibrator, get the Lovense Dulce. This toy is controlled via Bluetooth using an app on your phone.

You can also use the app to create your own vibration settings and even sync it with your favorite music, which is pretty cool.

Unlike the VeDO Kiwi, the Lovense Dulce stimulates both the G-spot and the clit at the same time. So, if you’re into dual stimulation toys like rabbit vibrators, this is a good pregnant-friendly option.

The Dulce looks like a big paperclip. Slide the large arm into your vagina against your G-spot and let the smaller external arm rest on your clit.

Then, use your phone to start the engines. Like the Kiwi, the Dulce is fully submersible for fun in the tub, and it’s got a battery life of 1-2 hours.

Sex Toys to Avoid During Pregnancy

Most sex toys are safe to use during pregnancy, but there are a few that are not recommended for various reasons.

👉 Extreme toys: Extreme toys like extra large dildos, anal gaping toys, or toys that involve stress and pain are not ideal to use during pregnancy. Remember, GENTLE is the keyword when it comes to pregnancy sex and masturbation, especially later in your pregnancy.

👉 Porous toys: Some toys are made of porous materials like TPE, PVC, and rubber. These toys are difficult to clean and more likely to become infected with bacteria or mold. An infected sex toy can transmit an infection to you, putting your pregnancy at risk. Stick to vibrators made of silicone.

👉 Anal Toys (sort of): Anal toys are actually fine to use during pregnancy, but they can cause hemorrhoids—and it’s not too uncommon, unfortunately. If you’re used to using anal toys, give it a try. If not, stick to vaginal play or try a small toy, like a beginner butt plug.

👉 Ejaculating Dildos: Anything that forces air into your vagina during pregnancy should be avoided, as there is a slight chance this could cause a dangerous embolism. Most ejaculating dildos involve some pumping mechanism to force liquid out, so it’s best not to risk it.

Using a Vibrator While Pregnant: What You Need to Know

If this is your first pregnancy—or if you’ve never used a vibrator while pregnant—there are some things you should know before you start playing.

Your body can react to pleasure and stimulation in different ways when you’re pregnant. Some of these reactions might come as a shock if you’re not ready.

Don’t worry, these pregnancy sex “side effects” are normal and do not pose a risk to your baby. Here are a few changes you might experience.

👉 Cramps: Cramping up is a normal response to having an orgasm while pregnant. Orgasms cause the uterine muscles to contract, and during pregnancy, this can cause some discomfort. Don’t worry—many women experience some cramping regularly after orgasm.

👉 Braxton Hicks Contractions: Braxton Hicks contractions are called “false” contractions, and they can occur post-orgasm. They don’t signify that your baby is coming, but they can still be intense. Luckily, they are rarely painful. They feel like an intense abdominal tightening.

👉 Bleeding: Bleeding can happen when using a vibrator, but it’s nothing to worry about as long as it’s light and doesn’t last. If you bleed regularly or your bleeding worsens, stop using your toy and talk to your doctor.

While the above reactions are normal during pregnancy, always remember to listen to your body and use your judgment.

If something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t. Don’t be afraid to contact your OB-GYN if anything happens that gives you red-flag vibes. It’s always better to be safe than sorry!

Yes, It’s Safe to Use a Vibrator While Pregnant

Sex and masturbation, either with a penis or a vibrator, are safe during pregnancy.

But you’ve still got to be smart about it by practicing sex toy safety and using your common sense. Before you hop on a vibrator, remember these important takeaways:

👉 Be gentle: Pregnant bodies require TLC, so be gentle to yourself during masturbation—and make sure your partner knows not to toss you around too much!

👉 Be clean: Keeping your vibrator and hands clean is the most important thing you can do to avoid sex-toy-related complications during your pregnancy. Use a sex toy cleaner to be extra sure your toy is flawlessly clean.

👉 Use lube: Lots of lube is a must when using sex toys, and it’s especially important during pregnancy. Only use water-based lube with your vibrator.

👉 Buy a safe vibrator: Not all sex toys are safe! Buy a non-porous vibrator made of silicone, and only buy toys from trusted brands and retailers like Condomania. Don’t trust random sellers, auctions, or gift stores at the mall.

Your pregnancy doesn’t have to get in the way of your sexual pleasure. In fact, using a vibrator can be an incredibly fulfilling way to explore your changing body.

Choose your pregnancy vibrator from the list above and enjoy the heightened sensitivity and new sensations that can come with pregnancy.
