What is a Non-Lubricated Condom?
A non-lubricated condom is a condom that doesn’t come pre-lubricated by the manufacturer. Sometimes called “dry condoms,” they are an alternative to standard lubricated condoms.
Most condoms are packaged with a bit of lube already applied to the shaft. This makes penetration easier and protects the condom from friction. You might have noticed that condoms feel kind of wet and sticky when you open them up. That’s the lube you’re feeling.
Non-lubricated condoms are not very common, but some people prefer them, especially if they’re sensitive to the lube normally found on condoms.

Why Use Non-Lubricated Condoms?
Let us say this first: You should ALWAYS use lube with condoms during sex. A lack of lube is the leading cause of broken condoms. A broken condom offers 0% protection against pregnancy and STI transmission.
However, there are a few good reasons to buy non-lubricated condoms.
- You are allergic to an ingredient in lube: If you have an allergy, you should buy non-lubricated condoms and use a different lube, such as an organic lube or a lube made for sensitive skin.
- You are using condoms for oral sex: Standard lube can taste kind of nasty. If you use condoms for oral sex, go dry and then add lube before you have penetrative sex. Or, use a flavored lube to spice up your foreplay.
- You don’t like the smell of condom lube: Some people are sensitive to the chemical smell of lube. Others can’t smell it at all. If your nose doesn’t agree with lube, choose a flavored or organic lube to accompany a non-lubricated condom.
- You prefer to use your own lube: Some people just know what they like. Most lube you can buy at the store is better than the standard lube included with your condom. If you prefer to use your own, you may want to opt for a non-lubricated condom.
Is it Better to Use Non-Lubricated Condoms?
For most people, it’s NOT better to use non-lubricated condoms. Lubrication makes sex safer and more enjoyable, and condoms are meant to be used with lube.
However, some people prefer non-lubricated condoms, such as those with an allergy to standard lube. They also make it more enjoyable to give blowjobs with a condom, because lube doesn’t taste very good.
For the vast majority of sex-havers, lubricated condoms are the way to go. But if you’re the exception, non-lubricated condoms are just as safe when used correctly. Remember to use your own lube with non-lubricated condoms when having vaginal or anal sex.
Are Non-Lubricated Condoms More Likely to Break?
Non-lubricated condoms are just as safe and effective as lubricated condoms. They protect against pregnancy and STI transmission with 98% effectiveness.
But, non-lubricated condoms are more likely to break if they are not used correctly. When having sex with a condom, you must use lube to protect the condom from breaking. Even non-lubricated condoms should be used with lube.
So, if you don’t use lube with a non-lubricated condom, it may be more likely to break than a lubricated condom. You can find lube to use with non-lubricated condoms here.
