Most people have heard of female condoms but have never actually used one — or seen one in person. That's a shame, because internal condoms are genuinely useful, and a lot of the hesitation around them comes down to not knowing how they work.

Here's the short version: a female condom (more accurately called an internal condom) is a soft, loose-fitting pouch that's inserted into the vagina or anus before sex. It lines the inside of the vagina rather than rolling over a penis. The result is a condom that the receptive partner controls, that's available before sex starts, and that's completely latex-free. There's more to like here than most people realize.

What is a Female Condom (Internal Condom)?

A female condom — officially called an internal condom — is a thin, flexible pouch made from nitrile (not latex). It has two rings: a smaller inner ring that sits at the closed end and is used to insert and anchor the condom inside the vagina, and a larger outer ring that stays outside the vaginal opening during sex.

The FC2 is the only FDA-approved internal condom currently available in the US. Browse our full condom collection here.

How to Use a Female Condom (Step-by-Step)

Internal condoms look more complicated than they are. Once you've done it once or twice, insertion takes less than a minute.

1. Check the expiration date and look for any visible damage before opening.

2. Open the package carefully — don't use scissors or teeth, which can damage the condom.

3. Get comfortable. Squat, lie down, or put one foot on a chair — whatever gives you access. Find the position that works for you.

4. Squeeze the inner ring. Pinch the inner (smaller) ring between your thumb and middle finger to make it narrower.

5. Insert the inner ring deep inside the vagina. Push it up as far as it will go — similar to inserting a tampon or diaphragm. It should sit comfortably against the cervix.

6. Make sure the outer ring lies flat against the outside of the vagina. About an inch should hang outside. This is normal and correct.

7. Guide your partner inside the condom at the start of sex. Make sure they're entering the condom and not the gap between the condom and the vaginal wall.

8. After sex, twist the outer ring to keep the fluid inside, then pull gently to remove. Wrap and discard — don't flush.

Can I insert it in advance? Yes — up to 8 hours before sex, which is one of its biggest advantages.

Are Female Condoms Effective?

Yes. When used correctly and consistently, female condoms are 95% effective at preventing pregnancy. With typical use (meaning occasional user error), the effectiveness is around 79%. This is slightly lower than external condoms, mostly because the technique is less familiar to most users — effectiveness improves with practice.

For STI prevention, internal condoms offer strong protection because they cover the vaginal walls as well as the vaginal opening. The outer ring also covers some of the external genitalia, offering slightly more STI coverage than external condoms in some situations.

Important: Never use an internal condom and an external condom at the same time. The friction between them increases the chance of both breaking. It's one or the other.

Can Female Condoms Be Used for Anal Sex?

Yes — internal condoms can be used for anal sex by removing the inner ring and inserting the pouch into the rectum. This is an off-label use but one that's commonly recommended by sexual health organizations, particularly in communities with limited condom access or for people who prefer the receptive partner to have control over protection.

Where to Buy Female Condoms

Female condoms are harder to find at pharmacies than external condoms — many stores simply don't carry them. Online is the easiest option. Condomania has been carrying internal condoms for decades and ships in completely discreet packaging.

FAQs

Is a female condom the same thing as an internal condom?

Yes — “female condom” is the older, more common name, but “internal condom” is the more accurate term. It works from inside the vagina (or anus), giving the receptive partner control over protection instead of the penetrative partner.

How is an internal condom different from a regular condom?

A regular (external) condom fits over the penis. An internal condom is inserted inside the body before sex and lines the vaginal or rectal canal. It doesn’t rely on erection or timing, which means it can be put in up to 8 hours in advance and stays in place during sex.

Are internal condoms as effective as external condoms?

Yes — when used correctly, they’re highly effective. Perfect use is about 95% effective at preventing pregnancy, and typical use is around 79% due mostly to user inexperience. For STI protection, they’re also very effective because they line the internal walls and reduce direct contact.

Can you feel an internal condom during sex?

Most people notice it a bit at first, but it usually becomes unnoticeable once things get going. The outer ring may be felt externally, which some partners actually find stimulating. Adding a bit of lube can make everything feel smoother and more natural.

Can you use lube with a female condom?

Yes — and you absolutely should. Water-based or silicone-based lube can be used on the inside or outside of the condom to improve comfort and reduce friction. Just avoid oil-based products if you're pairing it with latex external condoms (internal condoms themselves are nitrile and more flexible with lube types).

Can female condoms be used for anal sex?

Yes. The inner ring is removed, and the pouch can be used for anal sex as a barrier method. It’s an off-label but widely used option, especially for people who want the receptive partner to have more control over protection.
