Frequently asked questions
How do I prepare for first-time anal play?
Three things matter: relaxation (rushing causes tension which makes things uncomfortable), plenty of lube (silicone or water-based both fine — anal needs more lube than vaginal sex), and starting small (a finger or pinky-finger-sized toy first; work up over multiple sessions). Do NOT start with anything larger than a finger — it will be uncomfortable and you'll associate the whole experience with that discomfort.
Why do beginner anal toys have a flared base?
Critical safety feature: prevents the toy from getting stuck inside. The rectum has natural suction during arousal, and toys without a flared base can be drawn deeper than expected — a real ER-visit-causing problem. EVERY anal toy you use should have a flared base, T-bar, or pull cord. No exceptions, even for "I'll be careful."
What lube should I use for anal play?
Either water-based or silicone-based — both work for anal. Silicone-based lasts longer (helpful since anal play tends to need more lube reapplication), but isn't compatible with silicone toys. Water-based is universally compatible. Sliquid Sassy is a popular thicker water-based option specifically formulated for anal use. Avoid numbing/desensitizing lubes — pain is your body's signal that something's wrong; you want to feel that signal.
Is anal play safe?
Yes, with proper preparation, body-safe toys, and reasonable progression. The risks are: tearing from inadequate lubrication or going too fast, infection from poor hygiene or sharing toys without cleaning, and (rarely) hemorrhoid irritation. None of these are common with normal precautions. If you have hemorrhoids, fissures, or other anal/rectal medical issues, talk to your doctor before starting.
How do I clean anal toys?
Always clean immediately after use. Warm water and mild soap, or a dedicated toy cleaner. Never use anal toys vaginally without cleaning first (or without a fresh condom over them) — bacteria from the rectum can cause vaginal infections. Some users prefer to keep separate toys for anal vs. vaginal use to avoid the cross-contamination concern entirely.
