7 Tips for Buying Vegan Condoms

Why Vegan Condoms?

When you buy vegan condoms, you protect more than just your naughty bits from STIs and unwanted pregnancy... you'll also keep the planet a little cleaner and promote sustainable farming practices.

You don’t have to be a vegan to use vegan condoms, either. In fact, some non-vegans prefer them because they don’t contain synthetic chemical materials and aren’t tested on animals.

It’s a cleaner condom for when you want to get down and dirty.

But not all vegan condoms are safe or sustainable. Some are just cashing in on the hype without walking the walk.

Follow our 7 tips for buying vegan condoms to choose the right vegan rubber and keep your sex life sustainable.

What’s a Vegan Condom?

A vegan condom is a condom produced without any animal products or byproducts and that isn’t tested on animals. Many vegan condoms are also made from organic or all-natural materials, so they’re free from potentially harmful chemicals and pesticides.

Some think that all latex condoms are vegan because latex is a plant-based material. But this isn’t true. Most condoms are made with a milk protein called casein. Condoms that contain casein are not vegan.

Other condoms may be casein-free but tested on animals. Vegans can often be misled into buying these condoms.

To find a true vegan fit for cruelty-free fun between the sheets, follow our tips below.

Tips for Buying Vegan Condoms

1. The Key is Casein

Casein, an animal byproduct made from milk protein, is the reason that most latex condoms are not vegan. This is normally the only non-vegan part of a latex condom, so if your condom is casein-free, you’re cleared for lift-off.

This doesn’t apply to lambskin condoms, but it should be pretty obvious that they are not vegan-friendly!

2. Don’t Rule Out Rubber (Latex)

Once you’ve cleared the casein hurdle, you might think you’re good to go. But if you want to slip into something truly sustainable, you need to make sure your latex is up to snuff.

Latex is a type of rubber, which is plant-based. But a lot of rubber is harvested in a way that damages the environment. Make sure your condom is made with natural latex harvested from sustainably grown forests to protect animal habitats.

3. Steer Clear of Synthetic Materials

Some vegan condoms are technically vegan but still include some synthetic materials like spermicide, nitrosamines, and parabens (among others).

These chemicals can be potentially dangerous to you and the environment, so they’re best to keep away from your most sensitive parts.

All-natural and organic condoms are free of these chemicals.

4. Organic Doesn’t Mean Vegan

Beware of the organic label. While this means that your condoms are free from synthetic chemicals, they don’t mean your condom is vegan.

If you choose an organic condom, double-check to make sure it’s also casein-free.

5. Look for Fair Trade and Vegan Certified

When independent organizations back up the claims of your condom brand, it gives you a reason to trust them.

Fair Trade guarantees the ethical treatment of farmers and sustainable practices. Vegan certifications ensure that your condoms are 100% cruelty-free.

Not all vegan condoms have certifications, but if you don’t feel like doing much research, a certified brand is a risk-free option (we recommend certified vegan condom brands below!).

6. Don’t Overpay for Branding

Veganism is a growing global movement, but to many unscrupulous brands, it’s just a way to make some extra cash.

High-end or “exclusive” condom brands sell vegan condoms in fancy packaging for high prices. But they are often no better or more trustworthy than affordable vegan brands that have been in the game a lot longer.

Condomania does not offer these “fad” vegan condoms because they don’t pass our standards for safety and responsibility.

7. Some Condoms are Secretly Vegan

Yes, some condom brands are vegan and don’t make a big deal about it. It’s just the way they roll.

If you’ve tried a few self-professed vegan condom brands and still haven’t found the right fit, there’s still hope!

One of the most popular incognito vegan brands is ONE Condoms.

They’re some of the most affordable and responsible condoms out there, and they’re totally vegan.

Plus, they come in tons of different sizes, so you’ll find a fit that feels just right.

You’ll find loads of ONE condoms at Condomania.

Our Picks: Vegan Condoms

Condomania is the only curated condom shop on the web. That means we research every brand we put on our shelves to make sure it’s trustworthy. And we ensure every condom we offer is medically tested and safe. We put a slew of vegan brands to the test, too. These are the ones that made the cut.

Glyde

Glyde is one of the first vegan condom brands, and we love them because they don’t let it define them. They focus on making safe and kinky condoms at a great price. Being vegan isn’t a ploy for Glyde—it’s just the way the world should be.

With 4 sizes and 5 flavors to choose from (along with flavorless options), you have more selection here than you would from many non-vegan producers, let alone the notorious sparse pickings from organic and vegan brands.

Glyde condoms are known for being silky smooth and comfortable. That’s not easy to find in the vegan condom world because casein is the material that makes condoms feel soft and not rubbery.
