Ginseng and Personal Lubricants : A Potential Bedroom Booster

3 minute read

Herbalists have used the ginseng plant's root for hundreds of years and leave to treat nearly every imaginable ailment. In Eastern medicine, ginseng is traditionally used as a memory and energy enhancer, and the root is commonly found in sexual enhancement supplements from around the world.

More recently, ginseng has gained popularity as an additive in personal lubricants. There's solid science supporting some of the plant's purported effects, particularly the aphrodisiac qualities. A double-blind Korean study suggests that the plant might promote sexual function in humans by regulating blood flow.

The roots of the plant create nitric oxide, an important bio-regulator linked to erectile dysfunction. As nitric oxide plays a major role in sexual activity, ginseng might be an effective libido enhancement agent for men.

Some limited studies and anecdotal reports suggest that ginseng might improve sex for women by dilating the capillaries in sensitive tissues, allowing for enhanced receptivity. Still, researchers often have difficulty objectively gauging sexual satisfaction.

It is also important to note that ginseng is not widely accepted as a treatment for erectile dysfunction or any other sexual dysfunction. Still, the plant has shown some promise as a sexual enhancer when used in lubricants.

Warming Up to Ginseng

However, there's a more tangible reason to try ginseng-based lubricants: ground or extracted ginseng can create a warming, tingling feeling upon application, which many couples find pleasurable. This effect is most prominent in red ginseng, also known as Asian ginseng.

Of course, "pleasurable" is certainly a matter of personal preference, and people with susceptible skin should stick to lubricants with limited ingredients. Ginseng is a safe ingredient, and the warming sensation should dissipate fairly quickly.

However, you should immediately wash off any lubricant if you feel irritation or discomfort. When you pick up any new lubricant, you should test it on non-sensitive skin before bringing it into the bedroom.

Libido-Boosting Alternatives to Ginseng

Some users report incredible results with ginseng-based lubricants, but your personal results are all that matters. If you're not sold on ginseng's benefits or have an allergy to the plant, you can choose from many other natural ingredients for a libido-enhancing effect.

Yohimbine is a safe, popular alternative with established aphrodisiac effects. It's derived from the roots of the yohimbine plant or synthesized--the synthesized, concentrated version is known as yohimbine. L-arginine is another popular additive that stimulates nitric oxide production, potentially allowing for better blood flow to the genitalia.

Lubricants with mint and capsaicin can replicate the ginseng's tingling sensation, although some users find these ingredients overwhelming. Introducing new toys and lubricants can add some excitement to your bedroom, and given ginseng's powerful attributes, ginseng-based lubes are certainly worth a try.

As is the case with all specialty lubricants, your results may vary. Be sure to communicate with your partner, and if you find a lubricant that you enjoy, keep a bottle or two on hand to give your love life an occasional boost.
