Silicone sexual lubricant is a type of personal lubricant that reduces friction during sex or masturbation.
It makes penetration easier during PiV and anal sex, and it makes sex more comfortable if dryness occurs.
Silicone sex lube is made from body-safe silicone compounds. It’s much slipperier and longer-lasting than the water-based sexual lubricant (which is the type of lube you find in most shops).
Unlike gooey, jelly-like water-based lube, silicone lube is thinner and slicker. It also has an incredibly soft feeling that makes skin and condoms feel much more inviting.
You can think of silicone lube as a premium lube—it’s a big upgrade from basic water-based products. However, you also pay a pretty penny for the pleasure.
And, there are a few drawbacks to silicone lube you’ll want to know before you lube down.
I’m going to cover everything you need to know about silicone lube below.
And I’ll recommend some of the all-time great silicone sex lubes for the most satisfyingly slick sex (or masturbation) of your life.

What is Silicone Lube: The Details
What is silicone lube made of?
Silicone lube is a type of personal lubricant made from silicone compounds, such as Dimethicone, Cyclomethicone, and Dimethiconol.
You don’t need to know much about these compounds except that they are safe to put inside and outside your body.
Silicone lube is safe to use for all types of sex (vaginal, anal, and masturbation), and it’s condom-safe too.
What does silicone lube feel like?
Silicone lube is known for its silky, smooth feeling. It’s not gooey—it’s velvety. It makes every area of the body that it touches feel smoother and sexier.
Most silicone lube has a thinner consistency than jelly-like water-based lubes, so be careful not to squeeze out too much.
Once silicone lube goes on, it stays on. Silicone lube lasts a really long time because it’s water-resistant.
That means it doesn’t come off when it’s exposed to moisture, such as bodily fluids.
Unlike water-based lube, silicone lube doesn’t dry out when exposed to the air. It stays wet and slick for as long as you need it.
So, you can apply it once and enjoy slippery sex or masturbation for 20 minutes or more. Water-based lube lasts a few minutes at most.
When should you use silicone lube?
Because silicone lube is water-resistant, it’s perfect for aquatic sexual activities, such as sex in the bath, shower, or hot tub.
Just be careful because this stuff is slippery as heck. Getting it on the floor of your shower is bad news.
Silicone lube is also a top choice for anal sex. Butts don’t self-lubricate like vaginas do, so it’s good to have a super-slick and long-lasting lube for anal activities.
Silicone sex lube is a great masturbation companion, too. Because it doesn’t dry out, you can stroke till the cows come home without having to reapply more lube.
But really, you can use silicone lube for just about any sexual activity that you want to be slicker and more comfortable (but you can’t use it with silicone sex toys—more on that next).
Silicone lube is actually recommended more than water-based lube by many sexual health professionals because it’s safer and less irritating to sensitive areas of the body, such as vulvas and butts.
Are there any drawbacks to silicone lube?
Because silicone lube is so resilient and long-lasting, it can also be difficult to clean. You’ll need to soap up good to get the slick feeling off your skin.
It may also stain your sheets or clothes, so put a towel down when using it.
Luckily, you don’t need a lot of lube to get the job done, so you can tactically apply a few drops to the condom or the areas you need it. This can help prevent a mess.
The most important thing to remember about silicone lube is that it’s not safe to use with silicone sex toys.
Silicone lube degrades silicone material, so it can damage your toys or cause them to become infected with mold or bacteria.
Infected toys can pass infections on to you, resulting in an STI like a urinary tract infection or bacterial vaginosis—not fun.
But what if you just use silicone lube with your toys every once in a while?
Don’t risk it. Silicone lube can degrade your toys very quickly. Only use water-based lube with silicone sex toys.
If you’re looking for a sex lube to use with your toys, there are some very slick water-based sex lubes made specifically for use with toys, such as Tenga Hole Lotion.
If you have glass or metal toys, you’re good to go with silicone lube.
The only other drawback of silicone lube is the price. It can cost 2-3x as much as water-based lube. However, it tends to last much longer. There are some decent budget silicone lubes, such as Pjur Basic Silicone.
Is Silicone Lube Better than Water-based Lube?
Silicone sex lube is often considered better than water-based sex lube because it’s slicker and longer-lasting. In terms of its lubricating power, silicone is superior.
But water-based sex lube has its perks, too.
For instance, water-based lube is easier to clean than silicone lube, and it doesn’t stain. So, it’s a much more convenient go-to lube for when you just need a bit of extra lubrication.
Water-based lube is also much cheaper, so it’s worth keeping a bottle on hand.
I always keep a bottle of water-based Sliquid H2O nearby because I can use it anytime without a thought. Silicone lube takes a bit more prep, clean-up, and consideration.
If I’m having a quick solo sesh, and I don’t want to take off my clothes and lay a towel down, I’ll use water-based lube.
In other cases, silicone lube is far superior, such as for anal sex. Water-based lube just doesn’t cut it when you need to fit into a tight space.
Silicone lube makes anal more comfortable, more pleasurable, and safer for both partners.
There’s really only one situation in which water-based lube beats silicone lube: when using silicone sex toys. You can’t use silicone lube with silicone sex toys, so you must opt for water-based lube.
Can You Use Silicone Lube with Condoms?
Yes! Silicone lube is safe to use with all condoms, including latex and non-latex varieties. It’s also safe to use with dental dams.
Try not to get any silicone lube on your penis before putting the condom on. It should only go on the outside of the condom.
It’s very slippery, and it can cause the condom to slip off during sex. So, if you’re using silicone lube during foreplay, wash your D or at least take a towel to it before putting a condom on.
Is Silicone Lube Safe?
Silicone lube is very safe. In fact, it’s often recommended above water-based lube because it contains no irritants and is less likely to cause skin or pH issues.
Silicone lube does not break down or absorb into body tissue. That means it stays on top of your skin and doesn't go inside it.
This is also true of silicone lube inside your body—it will not absorb into any tissue. So, you can safely consume silicone lube, and it will not upset your stomach or enter your bloodstream.
It’s not recommended to eat silicone lube, but if you ingest some during oral sex, for example, it won’t cause any problems.
There are only a few silicone lube safety risks to be aware of:
👉 Silicone toys: The biggest safety rule of silicone lube is to avoid using it with silicone toys. Silicone lube can destroy the silicone material on your toys, resulting in porous surfaces that host bacteria and mold.
👉 Allergies: Although rare, some people are allergic to certain silicone ingredients. Allergic reactions are typically mild and may cause skin irritation.
👉 Fall risk: Silicone lube is very slippery, and it doesn’t dry or wash off surfaces easily. If you get any on the floor—especially in the shower—it is a serious fall risk. You can remove silicone lube from a surface by scrubbing it with soap and water.
It’s Time to Upgrade to Silicone Lube

It doesn’t just make sex feel better. This lube makes every touch feel softer and more intimate.
Your partner is going to love it too. Better lube means better sex, and your companion won’t forget that.
If you normally reapply water-based lube often during sex or masturbation, it’s time for an upgrade. Try silicone lube now, because life is too short to have sub-par sex.
