Lubricated Condoms: These Condoms are Ready for Action
When shopping for condoms, you might notice that most come with lubricant already on the condom. You may be wondering, is it normal for condoms to be lubricated? And is the lube safe for you and your partner?
The answer to both questions is yes.
It’s completely normal for condoms to contain a bit of lube. In fact, it’s the standard. The vast majority of condoms are lubricated, so you can buy lubricated condoms in any size or style.
The lube is applied to the outside of the condom before packaging. This ensures that the condom material (probably latex) is nice and slippery, which helps you and your partner have safer, more comfortable sex.
If you don’t want your condoms pre-lubed, you can buy non-lubricated condoms. Just make sure to buy some lube separately. It’s not safe or fun to have sex with a condom if you don’t have lube!
Choose a lubricated condom from the list above. Or, explore Condomania’s massive selection by narrowing your search based on size or style. As we said, nearly all condoms are lubricated, so you can’t go wrong!
What is a Lubricated Condom?
A lubricated condom is a type of condom that comes with sex lubricant pre-applied. The manufacturer adds lube to the exterior of the condom before packaging it in the condom wrapper.
When you open the condom, you might notice that it feels wet. This is a good thing! It’s just the lube.
Don’t rub off the lube or touch the condom too much after putting it on. The lube helps you to penetrate your partner more easily. This makes sex better for you and more comfortable for your partner. If you try to enter your partner without lube, you’ll make a bad (and potentially painful) first impression in bed.
Remember, lube is your friend. It makes sex safer and more pleasurable, and it helps the condom do its job of protecting you from STIs and pregnancy. That’s why almost all condoms are lubricated!
Top Lubricated Condoms to Buy Now
There’s nothing better than a simple, go-to lubricated condom that gets the job done when you’re in need. Here are a few of our favorites:
- A classic lubricated condom: Lifestyles Ultra Lubricated Condoms
- Affordable and reliable: Trojan ENZ Lubricated Condoms
- Premium lube: Kimono MicroThin Plus Aqua Lube
- Latex-free: LifeStyles Skyn Original
- Lightly lubricated: Crown Skinless Skin Ultra-Thin Condoms
- Extra lube: Durex Extra Sensitive ‘Smooth’
What’s so Special about Lubricated Condoms?
At first glance, there’s nothing special about lubricated condoms because almost all condoms are lubricated.
But in truth, lubricated condoms are pretty darn special.
Lubrication has a bunch of benefits. In fact, you should never use a condom without lube, even if you buy non-lubricated condoms. Here’s why:
- Lube makes sex safer: Lube helps prevent condoms from bunching, slipping off, and tearing. All of these mishaps will drastically increase your chances of getting an STI or making a baby.
- Lube boosts your pleasure: Lube helps you plow like a well-oiled machine—literally. When you’re properly lubed, both you and your partner feel more of each other and less of the condom.
-
Lube makes penetration easier: The first moments of entry can sometimes be uncomfortable for the person being penetrated. Lube makes these critical moments go smoothly.
Overall, lube makes you better in bed, and it reduces the chances of a condom malfunction. What’s not to love? Lube is so important that you shouldn’t just rely on the tiny bit of lube that comes pre-applied to your condom. You should keep a healthy stash of water-based lube on hand during sex and foreplay to keep everything slippery and safe.
Should You Use a Lubricated Condom?
Yes, you should use lubricated condoms. Lubricated condoms make sex better and safer. It’s most important to use lubricated condoms during penetrative sex (vaginal sex and anal sex).
However, there are a few instances in which you might not want to use a lubricated condom.
You may not want to use a lubricated condom if:
- You or your partner experience irritation: A very small number of people may have a mild reaction to ingredients in lube. This is more common with specialty lubes like flavored lube or spermicidal lube. If this happens, just switch to another lubricated condom, preferably containing a simple water-based lube (try any of our recommendations above). If you feel irritation from multiple lubricated condoms, switch to a non-lubricated condom and buy lube separately. Try a lube made for sensitive skin, like Pjur Med.
- You are using condoms for oral sex: Lube on condoms is not meant to go in your mouth. It’s safe to consume, but it’s not very tasty. If you’re having oral sex with condoms, use a non-lubricated condom and buy some flavored lube. Or, try flavored condoms. Just remember not to use flavored lube or flavored condoms during vaginal or anal sex. They’re for oral and foreplay only.
What Kind of Sex Lube is on Lubricated Condoms?
Most condoms are pre-lubed with water-based lube. Water-based lube is made of water, so it’s safe for you and your partner.
Certain premium condoms are pre-lubricated with silicone lube, which is a slicker and longer-lasting sex lube. Titan Condoms are a brand of large-size condoms that come with silicone lube pre-applied. The extra slickness can be a godsend to bigger guys.
Some condoms contain lubricants that do more than just wet your whistle. Climax control condoms are pre-lubricated with desensitizing lube, a numbing agent that helps guys last longer. Spermicidal condoms are coated in a lube that contains a sperm-killing chemical, adding an extra line of defense against pregnancy.
When you see a condom that simply says “lubricated,” you can expect it to include a bit of water-based lube on its exterior. Nice and simple!
FYI: What You Need to Know about Lubricated Condoms
Lubricated condoms come pre-packed with lube, so you can roll one on and get straight to the action.
But, if you want to have the best experience (and give your partner a romp worth remembering), there are a couple of little things you should know about lubricated condoms.
- The lube on the condom is just to get you started. You need to use more lube. Unless you only plan on having sex for a minute or two, the lube on the condom won’t last. And it’s not meant to. The lube provided with the condom is meant to grease the wheels, not go the distance. You need to reapply lube from your personal lube stash during sex to achieve the best results. Grab a bottle of water-based lube like Sliquid H2O to keep on your nightstand. Get a silicone lube like Gun Oil if you want a longer-lasting lube.
- Never use flavored condoms/lube for sex. Flavored lube and flavored condoms are made with tasty flavors that are perfect for tongue-related activities. But they are not ideal for penetration. These flavorful additives may upset the pH balance of the vagina, causing discomfort or infection. Stick with basic lubricated condoms when having vaginal or anal sex.
Are there Non-lubricated Condoms?
Yes! There are non-lubricated condoms—but not many. Almost all condoms contain lube because lube makes them better and safer.
If you choose a non-lubricated condom, remember to buy a bottle of lube. You shouldn’t use condoms without lube (except when having oral sex).
You can find a selection of non-lubricated condoms here.
Do Lubricated Condoms Cause UTIs?
No, standard lubricated condoms do not cause urinary tract infections (UTIs) in women.
In fact, non-lubricated condoms are much more likely to cause a UTI, according to research. This is why you should always use lube when using a condom, especially if it’s non-lubricated.
Be careful what type of lube and condom you choose. Standard condoms are lubricated with water-based lube, which won’t cause a UTI. However, flavored condoms and spermicidal condoms may increase the risk of a UTI. They contain ingredients that can upset the pH balance of the vagina.
We recommend buying lubricated condoms that contain water-based lube, such as the ones we recommended above.
